Dell offers tips for green IT

All businesses should evaluate their operating processes and incorporate practical environmental measures, according to Dell, says GreenerComputing.

The company offered Computer Weekly a list of tips for small and mid-sized enterprises (SME) that are considering introducing green IT practices. Dell first suggested that businesses programme their printers to print double-sided to reduce paper use.

The company advised SMEs to take a look at virtual working practices, such as allowing employees to telecommute and use "hot desks" when in the workplace. These types of practices can trim the need for office space, furniture and energy.

EUGA to help Bulgarian SMEs

A memorandum of co-operation was signed on 1 October between major banks, branch organisations and the State Administration Ministry under the European Union Grant Advisor (EUGA) programme, says SofiaEcho.com.

EUGA is an initiative from Microsoft. The programme helps SMEs in Bulgaria by providing more information about access to European funds, and with technical as well as other forms of support in applying for funding, investor.bg reported.

The memorandum was signed by the State Administration Ministry, BTC, Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), State Agency for Information Technology and Communication, Confederation of Employers and Industrialists, Raifaizenbank, DSK Bank, Unioncredit Bulbank, Foundation for Reform of Local Self-Governance and a representative of Microsoft Bulgaria.

African SMEs need technology

Dr Lloyd Atabansi, MD of Hewlett Packard West Africa, spoke at the recent two-day Africa Small Business Summit at Le Meriden Hotel, Lagos, says AllAfrica.com.

Atabansi noted that ICT can significantly help micro-enterprises grow, be more productive and create more jobs in their communities.

For SMEs to survive and compete effectively in today`s business, the knowledge and utilisation of ICT is essential, he said.
