AltX-listed telecoms group Huge Group has appointed Rajen Pillay, currently operations director at Vox Telecom subsidiary Orion Telecom, to its board.

This morning's announcement comes a day after Huge financial director James Herbst, himself a former Vox director, said the group would appoint two "very senior people" to its board this week. Their tasks would include managing opportunities created by the proposed merger with iTalk Cellular, he noted.

Huge Group is in the process of concluding a merger agreement with iTalk, for which it is paying R511 million in a share-based deal.

Pillay has 18 years' experience in corporate telecommunications.

He says in a statement that iTalk has a lot of potential. "The business is poised for significant growth and this just the challenge I need in my career right now."

iTalk's staff complement of 295 will bring the combined group's staff numbers to about 460.

Herbst says the group will appoint at least four executive people in the next month, and then look to the executives to build their teams to create the internal capacity to deal with the opportunities created by the merger.
