Boomers critical of GenY

According to a study by IBRS, Generation Y: Why Babyboomers Should be Nervous, Generation Y workers have almost the opposite view on structure, hierarchy and process to the generations that cultivated the IT field, creating problems for the future of the industry, says Australian IT.

The contrasting views of the two generations could affect the future of IT governance, information security and IT architecture, the research says.

There was an increased risk to data confidentiality, integrity and availability if Generation Y bypass control mechanisms because they think it slows them down, it says. The report shows Generation Y relate to the Internet and technology in a way that is unlike most in the older generations because they understand and have an affinity with it.

Oman seeks diversification

The creation of a knowledge-based economy with the focus on ICT is a key ingredient of the Sultanate's ambitious diversification programme, says Khaleej Times Online.

"The vision for Oman's economy - 'Oman2020', is designed to steer the shifting economy through a diversification plan. A major component of this plan is the creation of a knowledge-based economy with a focus on developing the ICT sector in a structured manner," secretary-general of the national economy minister Mohammed bin Nasser Al Khusaibi said.

He was opening an Asia-Pacific Computer Audit, Control and Security conference attended by delegates from more than 20 countries. The-two day event, held in Oman for the first time, is hosted by the Muscat chapter of the Information Security Audit and Control Association.

PMC can't pay CIO

The Pune Municipal Corporation has planned to appoint a CIO for its technical committee formed for the implementation of e-governance, but the civic body's own "low salary standards" has compelled it to ask the Software Exporters' Association of Pune to pay his monthly salary, says expressindia.com.

A proposal to this effect has been tabled by the civic administration before the standing committee. In order to make all civic departments embrace e-governance, a technical committee has already been formed.

Chairman of the ETH Research Lab Vijay Bhatkar; president of All India Computer Association Deepak Shikharpurkar; founder chairman and MD of Persistent Systems Dr Anand Deshpande; and experts from the National Informatics Centre and Wipro Technologies each are members of the committee.
