MultiChoice expands online offering

MultiChoice's value-add DSTV on Demand PC offering is set to include international content "shortly".

Introduced last year as DSTV Broadband, the service offers existing DSTV subscribers the opportunity to download soapies, sporting highlights and other local content onto their PCs, free of charge.

"Forum users have been very positive [about the product offering]," says MultiChoice GM for new media Richard Fyffe. "There have also been requests for international content, which we are planning to include shortly."

Fyffe says the DSTV Broadband service was initially tested by staff from the group's companies and was then officially launched in November. It was renamed DSTV on Demand PC at the beginning of February.

"Due to there being no marketing of the service, as well as the current broadband infrastructure in SA (expensive and slow speeds), the take-up has been slow. However, this is what we had expected," says Fyffe. "No targets have thus far been set."

He explains that the offering is being positioned as a value-add for existing premium subscribers. Local soap operas and sports highlights have proved to be the most popular content, he adds.

Meanwhile, DSTV on Demand, where content can be downloaded onto existing decoders, will be launched before mid-year. The service will be available to all PVR subscribers.
