ISPA meets with Gauteng members

The Internet Service Providers' Association of SA (ISPA) will reach out to its Gauteng-based members this week, holding a series of one-on-one briefing sessions with interested ISPs.

The meetings cover the delays and uncertainties surrounding the new licensing framework in line with the Electronic Communications Act, as well as the potential impact on value-added network service providers, says ISPA GM Ant Brooks.

Furthermore, the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act places certain obligations on ISPs, particularly relating to unsolicited commercial messages or spam, and ISPs also need clarity and advice regarding this pivotal piece of legislation, he says.

Brooks notes that ISPA previously held roadshows in Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth in an attempt to extend its reach to members nationwide.

The organisation is also considering roadshows in KwaZulu-Natal, in June, and Cape Town, in November, he says.

Roadshows are an effective way to build closer relationships with members and help them stay abreast of legislative changes, Brooks adds.

"We'd like to engage with our members and help them understand where the industry is headed and how they can help shape it."

Way forward

Feedback derived from ISPA members during the roadshow will form a crucial part of the association's direction and strategy, notes Brooks.

It is also hoped that close interaction between ISPA and its members will encourage insight into important industry issues with respect to current activities, he says.

"One of our primary objectives, as an organisation, is to identify the individual needs of ISPs to enable us to determine how best to advise them."

The Gauteng roadshow will encourage participation, and ensure ISPs' needs are being heard and dealt with where possible, he says.
