The Nepad e-Africa Commission will host the Nepad e-schools stakeholder conference, starting tomorrow, at Emperors Palace, in Kempton Park.

The three-day conference is hosted in partnership with government, as well as private sector sponsors.

Participants will review implementation of the Nepad e-schools initiative to date, and discuss a business plan for the roll-out of the initiative throughout Africa, the Nepad-Africa Commission says in a media statement.

"The business plan recommends different models for the continental roll-out, such as the management and administration, communication, financing, common quality standards and the effective use of ICT and information tools, for the initiative," it says.

Expected conference participants include high-ranking African government and private sector officials, Nepad e-schools country coordinators, representatives from African development banks, learners and teachers.

Deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka will deliver the opening address at the conference tomorrow, the commission says.

The programme also includes government representatives and corporate sponsors like AMD, Cisco Systems and HP Southern Africa, who will outline lessons learnt from the initial launch of the project.

Nepad introduced the e-schools initiative in 11 African countries in the first phase of the project, with president Thabo Mbeki unveiling the South African leg of the programme in Mpumalanga last year.

African countries participating in the project include Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal and Uganda.

South African schools taking part in the initiative are Lomahasha High School, in Mpumalanga; Hendrick Makapan Secondary School, in North West; Ipetleng Secondary School, in the Free State; Isiphosethu High School, in KwaZulu-Natal; and Thozamisa High School, in the Eastern Cape.
