Vodacom reaches 34m customers

Johannesburg, 27 May 2008

The Vodacom Group increased its total customers to 34 million during the financial year ended 31 March.

This is a 12.7% growth when compared to the 30.2 million subscriber base the mobile operator reported for the same period last year.

In a trading statement this morning, CEO Alan Knott-Craig said revenue increased by 17.1%, to R48.2 billion.

Profit from operations increased by 15%, to R12.5 billion, and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation increased by 15.7%, to R16.5 billion, says the company.

Cash generated from operations increased by 17.8%, to R16.3 billion, it adds.

Vodacom explains it is releasing this strategic information to provide clarity in light of the fact that Vodafone, which holds a 50% stake in Vodacom, is reporting financial results for the same period today.

Vodacom says it will provide a detailed analysis of the group's operations, as well as indicators for each of the five countries where it has operations, at its annual results on 9 June.
