A paper of the of Standard Bank and Fujitsu Siemens Computers-sponsored SME Survey has been selected by a panel of experts to be presented at the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) world conference, to be held in Canada, in June.

Principal researcher Arthur Goldstuck says the SME Survey is the largest annual study of factors influencing the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in SA.

It has scored an international coup by being selected for presentation, he says.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase the resources used by competitive SMEs in a developing country, such as SA."

"Having our 2007 findings presented at a high-level international conference is an indication that the findings have relevance for other developing countries too," says Goldstuck.

The paper that has been selected for the ICSB conference is entitled "The blueprint for a successful SME in SA", and is based on interviews with more than 5 000 decision-makers within SMEs in SA.

This will be the 53rd ICSB world conference and it aims to bridge the gap between research and action.

Researchers, educators, policy makers and business service providers from around the world will attend the event, to be held at the World Trade and Convention Centre, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, from 22 to 25 June.

The research for the SME Survey 2008, presently under way, focuses on the infrastructure challenges faced by SMEs in SA.
