After selling data "almost by default in the past", MTN has now partnered with MWeb to offer extended wireless data packages, with faster download speeds, to its customers.

This is according to MTN SA senior manager for PR and internal communications Ntombi Mhangwani.

Mhangwani says the demand for data services across SA continues to grow rapidly. "With MWeb coming on board as a fully-fledged service provider (SP), but dedicated to distributing data, it will be the first SP signed up by MTN to focus exclusively on selling data connectivity," she says.

"Data is MWeb's core business, while voice packages have traditionally been MTN's core business - we have sold data almost by default in the past."

MWeb will be offering MTN's packages, which range from the entry-level 350MB package, retailing at R179 per month, through to the 2GB package, retailing at R449 per month. Both packages come with a free MTN modem.

According to Natalie Thayer, GM of MWeb, these products bridge the gap between MWeb's current 3G/HSDPA wireless broadband offerings, which start at 40MB and go up to 500MB, providing a middle ground for new entrants to broadband Internet.

"After realising the benefits of always-on Internet, customers would then have the opportunity to gradually increase their data cap if they so wish," says Thayer.
