US e-mail via India

A call centre in India is processing the online funds collected for US presidential nominees Barack Obama and John McCain and sending thank-you e-mails to donors, says The Economic Times.

Campaign and election technology firm ElectionMall runs the centre in Delhi, according to industry sources.

However, CEO Ravi Singh, a US citizen of Indian origin, says that only his US team does fulfilment work. ElectionMall also has a R&D laboratory in India to develop software solutions for the US political industry.

Outsourcing affects customers

Research indicates the effect of offshore outsourcing customer service in most cases is significantly negative - but similar to the effect of outsourcing customer service domestically, according to The Wall Street Journal.

After analysis of offshoring and outsourcing activities of 150 North American companies and business units from 1998 to 2006, it was found that as a group, those that outsourced customer service saw a drop in their score on the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, or ACSI, a measure created by the National Quality Research Center at the University of Michigan.

The declines were roughly the same whether companies outsourced customer service domestically or overseas.

BPO helps economy

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said losses from the high prices of imported oil and rice could be recouped from exports and the business process outsourcing industry that continue to expand amid the economic crisis, reports Inquirer.net.

"The best response by the Philippines to the rising global commodity price today is, if on the liability side of the national balance sheet, we sustained a loss from rising prices of commodities that we import, oil and rice, then we should endeavour to generate compensating gains on the asset side to the commodities we can export."

The president made her speech at the 8th ASEAN [Association of Science and Technology] Science and Technology Week held recently.
