New SITA board announced

Johannesburg, 08 Aug 2008

The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) this afternoon announced the new board of directors of the State IT Agency (SITA). Public service and administration minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi has made reappointments and new appointments to the SITA board, following Cabinet's ordinary meeting on Wednesday.

The three-year terms of four board members, including chairman Thenjiwe Chikane, expired on 3 August and another one is to expire on 31 August.

"Ms Chikane indicated that she would not be available for reappointment as chairperson or as an ordinary board member, because of other professional commitments," the DPSA said in a statement.

However, sources close to the agency claim that Chikane quit over the debacle involving former CEO Llewellyn Jones, who quit amid government interference with the SITA tender process.

While an investigation is currently under way into allegations that SITA deputy chairman and government CIO Michelle Williams was directly meddling in the awarding of a tender, she remains on the board.

Fraser-Moleketi appointed a new chairman, Zodwa Manase, who held this position before, between 2003 and 2005, and reappointed another board member, whose term expired, as well as a member whose term is to expire at the end of August. To expand the capacity of the board, according to the requirements of the SITA Act, two new board members were appointed.

Reappointed to the board are: Manase; N Dhevcharran and C C W Kruger; and newly appointed are: G Rothschild and A van der Merwe.

The board now consists of: Manase (chairman and non-executive member); Michelle Williams (deputy chairman and non-executive; DPSA representative); C B Clark (non-executive); N Dhevcharran (non-executive); C C W Kruger (non-executive; National Treasury representative); A M Luthuli (non-executive); M Makhekhe-Mokhuane (non-executive); N Molope (non-executive); G Rothschild (non-executive); R Sekese (non-executive) and A van der Merwe (non-executive).

"Fraser Moleketi has accepted SITA CEO Llewellyn Jones's resignation, and Ms Femke Pienaar has taken over as acting CEO effective, 1 August, for a period of 14 days while the board is consulting with the minister on the acting position," the DPSA said in a statement.

"The minister is awaiting the outcome of the SITA board's interrogation of all allegations which have been speculated on in recent media reports regarding his resignation."
