Matrix Vehicle Tracking is re-aligning its brand with its international affiliates, and will trade as the MiX Telematics group. However, the Matrix brand name will be retained on certain products.
Ri"ette Botha, MD of MiX Telematics Africa, says the structure, which became effective yesterday, is aimed at broadening the company's product offering "to offer a complete suite of commercial and consumer solutions, including mobile resource management, safety and security, as well as legal compliance management".
Telematics, as a holding company, was formed in 1996. In 2007, it acquired Omnibridge, which resulted in a conglomerate of various brands across the globe. Now all these companies are to be aligned under one brand: MiX Telematics.
Botha says the MiX Telematics group has distribution capability on six continents and in more than 75 countries.
The African division's head office is in Midrand. "It has a strong and growing presence in Nigeria and business in Sub-Saharan Africa is growing fast," she says.
The international division has offices in the UK, the US, Germany and SA. The head office is based in Stellenbosch.
"The combined installed subscriber base of the MiX Telematics group is in excess of 445 000 units," says Botha.
According to her, few people realise exactly how advanced tracking systems have become.
"Matrix has developed specialised software which works in conjunction with our units. Our software [uses] complex algorithms to calculate and display the vehicle position on a digital map," she says.
According to her, fighting highly organised crime syndicates in SA has forced tracking companies to innovate on almost a daily basis to better the capabilities of tracking units.
"That is also why South African-developed tracking units are probably the most advanced in the world."
