James Theledi, CEO of the Universal Service and Access Agency of SA (USAASA), has been suspended.
While USAASA would not officially comment on the matter this morning, sources close to the agency say the suspension stems from inappropriate behaviour exhibited by the CEO towards a high-ranking official within USAASA.
According to sources, the incident happened at the Presidential International Advisory Council on Information Society and Development, held in Limpopo last weekend.
It is alleged that at least two well-known industry players witnessed the incident involving a female USAASA executive, in the lobby of a Hoedspruit hotel on Saturday night.
It is understood that Theledi's access card has been confiscated and he has been barred from USAASA's offices. An emergency board meeting is to be called tomorrow to look into the matter, say the sources.
Theledi was appointed CEO of USAASA in June last year, having previously served as deputy director-general of the Department of Public Enterprises.
He was not available for comment this morning.
USAASA head of corporate affairs Dr Sharon Horton would not comment on the allegations this morning, but said board chairman Cassandra Gabriel would reply to ITWeb's queries. However, she had not done so by the time of publication.
Theledi's suspension follows the recent suspension and resignation of USAASA CFO Keith Keys, who quit following a disciplinary hearing, which found him guilty of financial mismanagement.
Keys was never involved in fraud or corruption, and no money had gone missing from the agency's vaults, said the agency. "It is really just a sad case of mismanagement on his part, and the investigation found him guilty of that."
