The first South African business process management (BPM) chapter has been formed, with companies backing the initiative to develop a certified BPM community and body of knowledge.

The chapter is expected to be up and running by mid-year.

David Lyneham-Brown, the South African BPM chapter founder and CEO of the Business Process Transformations Group (BPTG), says the chapter aims to set up a recognised BPM standard so that companies can be accredited for their BPM strategies.

Improving BPM

The chapter is a membership-based organisation led by its users. There will be regular monthly meetings and structured knowledge-sharing sessions.

ITWeb's BPM Summit & Awards

More information about the ITWeb BPM Summit & Awards, which takes place on 25 to 27 August 2009 at Montecasino, Fourways, is available online here.

Lyneham-Brown says the chapter will assist companies to improve their business processes. “The chapter will provide access to case studies, formal shared training opportunities and discussions with subject matter experts. One of the benefits that we would like to see in the chapter is the ability to leverage international experience.”

Interactive forum

The chapter will act as a forum for business professionals to share knowledge, experience and ideas relating to BPM. It will also organise informal video conferencing sessions, seminars, workshops and formal conferences.

Lyneham-Brown adds that meetings will be made possible through the use of Web 2.0 technologies, such as online forums, blogs, Wikis and video conferencing. “As the networks improve in the country, technologies such as Skype and online forums will be hugely powerful. Our strategy for this year is to drive structured knowledge-sharing sessions.”

The steering group members elected include: Rose Kannu (Sasol), Liaqat Azam (Eskom), Marcus Hodel (Ovations), Barry Myburgh (Insyte), Vickesh Dhookie (IBM), Richard Aldous (Rethink) and Pieter Steyn (BPTG).

ITWeb is partnering with the BPTG to organise the BPM Summit and Excellence Awards, in August, which will be chaired by Lyneham-Brown and supported by the BPM chapter. The steering group's role will be to structure a constitution, establish forum centres, provide input on the awards process and shape the August 2009 BPM conference.
