Downturn hits 1 700 Nokia jobs

Nokia is planning to lay off 1 700 people worldwide to cut costs as the global economic downturn strikes deeper into the mobile phone sector, states Union Tribune.

Nokia said the job cuts include 700 in Finland, where it employs 13 000 people, and that its operations in the US and Britain would also be targeted.

The company, which did not give other details about the reductions, employs 128 800 people worldwide.

Federal CIO back on the job

Vivek Kundra has been appointed as the US federal government's CIO again, following a leave of absence stemming from corruption charges surrounding his former employees, says Internet News.com.

Kundra stepped aside last week after the FBI raided the office of the CTO of Washington, DC, and arrested Yusuf Acar, a security official who oversaw contractor agreements.

President Obama tapped Kundra for the newly-created position of federal CIO earlier this month. Kundra will be responsible for managing the government's entire technology portfolio and budget, and for overseeing its enterprise architecture.

Pano Logic names finance VP

Pano Logic, provider of server-based virtual desktop computing, revealed the appointment of Jeffrey Page as vice-president of finance, says Virtualisation.com.

Page will be responsible for all aspects of accounting and financial reporting. He joins Pano Logic from Firetide, a provider of multi-service mesh networks for industrial and municipal applications, where he served as the vice-president of finance and operations.

“Jeffrey has strong experience in finance and operations,” says John Kish, president and CEO of Pano Logic. “As we continue to build on the momentum we experienced in 2008, I expect Jeffrey will be a strategic part of growing the company and helping Pano Logic reach its next major milestones as the leader in desktop virtualisation.”
