PC gaming resists recession

According to recent market reports, consumer spending has slowed in all markets, but less so in the gaming industry, and in particular less in the PC gaming segment, according to Adrenaline Vault.

Jon Peddie Research delivered their market forecast for PC gaming hardware last week, and the results are somewhat encouraging, even with the modest drop due to economic conditions.

The total PC gaming hardware market is forecasted to drop $1.4 billion (-7%) in 2009 from $20.07 to $18.65 billion. The decline is due to reduced sales because of the recession, and lower prices on PCs and components, but PC gaming systems seem to have suffered the least discounting which illustrates the value consumers place on such systems.

Sony debuts 'gesture gaming' phone

Swedish-Japanese phone maker Sony Ericsson unveiled a new gaming phone called Yari last week, according to Reuters.

The Yari reacts to phone users' gestures, similar to Nintendo's popular Wii remote.

The company said in a statement the new phone model with 'gesture gaming' capabilities would also have a 5-megapixel camera and dedicated gaming keys.

Mobile gaming takes off

Just a couple of years ago mobile phone games were considered little diversions for bored commuters; now a lot of industry leaders see mobile gaming as the next frontier for video game developers, reports I4U.

One of those leaders is Yves Guillemot, CEO of Ubisoft, and he believes the Apple iPhone is just the beginning for mobile gamers.

Apple is important to the gaming industry right now for a couple of reasons, and one of them is the App Store. There is a lot of money to be made in the smartphone app market, and some of the most popular apps are mobile games.
