Annex targets local ADSL space with new 3Com solution

Johannesburg, 23 Nov 2006

A newly released wireless ADSL solution, the 3Com OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless 108Mbps 11g Firewall Router, is now available to the local market through Annex Distribution.

Annex Distribution is an official distribution partner to 3Com and is primarily focused on technology that contributes towards the network management and administration market segment.

The latest solution is a high-performance router that features eXtended range (XR) technology and a combination of ADSL modem, router, 802.11g wireless access point, four-port switch and a firewall. It is designed to enable up to 253 (64 wireless) users to share a single ADSL connection.

XR technology is an advanced chipset, incorporating baseband architecture, developed by 3Com to ensure solutions provide a host of benefits. These include longer range connectivity, single access point coverage in home networks and the elimination of dead spots in corporate wireless LANs. It also provides up to two times the distance of last generation competing WLAN solutions.

The 3Com OfficeConnect ADSL Wireless Router is designed for maximum performance. Its high-speed routing engine and 108Mbps wireless throughput means the solution can manage high volume data transfer and Internet downloads, including that from multimedia applications.

"We are very excited to contribute towards the further exposure and adoption of this product within the local mobile and wireless and ADSL space. It is definitely built to promote mobility and wireless connectivity. Aside from the fact that it is WiFi certified, the router also supports Wireless Distribution System, which simplifies the set up of an extended or completely wireless network," explains Hendrik Calitz, 3Com product manager at Annex Distribution.

"Furthermore, the solution addresses the need for network security and protection with the inclusion of advanced wireless security and firewall. The incorporation of hacker pattern detection, URL filtering, IP and MAC address filtering as well as SurfControl Web filtering reinforce the overall security," adds Calitz.

The SurfContol Web Filter service is an optional content filtering service for routers that automatically blocks unsolicited correspondence and access to undesirable online content.

Additional features include: Four 10/100 Ethernet LAN ports with Auto MDI/MDIX for wired LAN connectivity to multiple users or another LAN; IP routing allows for the device to be used in multi-networked environments; WiFi certification helps ensure interoperability with WiFi certified products from other vendors.

"There is certainly scope for a solution that adds value to the wireless experience and the development of the ADSL space. There is considerable interest in this market as businesses look to improve their digital capability and maximise off mobile and wireless technical infrastructure. The main objective is to leverage off benefits while keeping the total cost of ownership at a minimum," says Calitz.
