Red Hat has appointed Obsidian Systems as its first SA Red Hat Premier Business Partner. A statement from Red Hat says the move comes part and parcel with its revised strategy for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region.

As a part of the deal Obsidian will specialise in infrastructure solutions, the statement says. The enterprise open source provider is already established in southern Africa and offers open source technology services, including training, consulting and solutions. Obsidian is also a Red Hat training partner in SA.

The premier partner status is the highest possible certification for Red Hat partners in EMEA, the statement says. This is indicated by Red Hat's new three-tiered programme that aims to more accurately indicate the skills of businesses that provide Red Hat-based solutions.

Red Hat SA country manager Louis Seyffert says the Linux developer and distributer has reassessed its international partner programme and adjusted its certifications.

The company is on a drive to recruit more partners internationally, as markets realise the value of its products. Seyffert also says the programme has been standardised for international markets.

Obsidian Systems MD Muggie van Staden says the partnership is an affirmation of the years of work Obsidian has put into its Red Hat skills.
