Bring computer, get Linux

Linux user groups are holding Installfests at several venues this weekend, aimed at allowing the public to take their computers to various locations and have Linux installed.

"Many people in SA have heard of open source software before and are really eager to try it, but are intimidated by the installation procedure and threat of data loss," says Thomas Black, open source program manager for the Shuttleworth Foundation.

The Shuttleworth Foundation, in conjunction with the Cape Linux Users` Group and Schools Linux Users` Group, will host two Install fests in Cape Town on Saturday.

"By hosting events like these we want to provide an opportunity for these people to have open source software safely installed on their computers, allowing them to witness the power and freedom associated with open source software," Black says.

Installfests are non-commercial events organised by volunteers on their own time and using their own resources.
