64-bit AMD fully compatible with Java Desktop System

Johannesburg, 14 Oct 2003

Sun Microsystems' Java Desktop System will be fully compatible with the AMD Athlon 64 processor, providing an alternative 64-bit desktop platform for demanding workstation computing.

According to Sean O'Hare, Java Systems Architect at Sun Microsystems SA, the company will provide both 32- and 64-bit Java Desktop System (JDS) support for the recently announced Athlon 64.

"The combination of the 64-bit processor with the JDS will bring a new paradigm of power to demanding systems used in such sectors as manufacturing, call centres and government.

"With the 64-bit architecture, systems can deliver increased processing and memory power, and enhanced ability to process mixed and digital media as well as graphics-intensive computing," he explains.

"The JDS represents the first viable Windows alternative in 15 years, delivering a secure, familiar, affordable desktop solution to enterprise customers at a fraction of the price."

O'Hare says the JDS includes a full desktop environment, the StarOffice 7 productivity suite, the Java 2 Standard Edition platform, a windowing environment, the Mozilla browser and an integrated Linux operating system. It also includes e-mail, calendaring and instant messaging applications able to run users' existing x86-compatible hardware.

"The JDS embraces the concept of bringing full functionality to a computer system without having to purchase and install several software packages, which is a completely different approach to competitive offerings," notes O'Hare.

Sun is increasingly applying its strength in enterprise Linux and Solaris to deliver desktop products that can be used by businesses as an inexpensive, secure and affordable alternative.

The JDS on the AMD Athlon 64 processor will deliver the interoperability between Linux, Solaris and Windows environments, ensuring protection of existing investments.
