Gauteng MEC for education Ignatius Jacobs says the GautengOnline project is on track, albeit with a "very tight schedule".

The GautengOnline project, which aims to give every learner and educator in the province Internet access by 2006, got off to a slow start after its launch in 2001. However, Jacobs told a media conference yesterday that by the end of March, computer laboratories will have been rolled out to 1 100 schools.

"We have currently completed installations of equipment in 120 schools, and a further 230 schools are almost to be completed. We expect to have completed 500 schools by the end of February," he said.

"This completion includes installation of equipment, orientation of educators, and immediate access to the Internet and use of e-mail. This project will benefit more than 500 000 school children throughout the province," Jacobs added.

He said the six suppliers responsible for the roll-out - Business Connection, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Mustek, Pinnacle and Sahara - were working on a "very tight schedule" but that the government believed the deadlines would be met.
