Durban-based start-up I-Cube, which launched in January, is gearing up to go to market with "affordable" face and licence plate recognition solutions.

I-Cube MD Barry Dudley says the company aims to provide a one-stop solution that is affordable and easy to use.

"The problem with biometric solutions is that in order to make a positive identification, one has to purchase very expensive technology. We are therefore providing an affordable face recognition solution to assist security staff in identifying people," he says.

The system can be used at casinos, sports stadiums or stores where security guards need to make a positive identification, Dudley says. Using the solution, clients are able to build up a database of people and if security staff are suspicious of one of the people passing checkpoints, the picture taken can be matched by the camera to a database.

"The software allows the user to narrow down the search by entering criteria including age, race, hair colour, size and gender into the system. It then provides the user with a number of possibilities and the staff can see if there is a match between the person in question and the people listed on the database," he says.

If a company cannot afford the system, Dudley says companies can opt to rent a database on I-Cube servers and access it via e-mail. The user then e-mails the photograph through to I-Cube with the criteria and an automated response is generated and e-mailed back to the users.

Dudley says the licence plate recognition could be used at toll gates to search for motorists with warrants against their names or to monitor toll gate card users as well as for companies wanting to manage their vehicle fleets.

He says I-Cube will launch its solutions at the trade only security exhibition at Gallagher Estate on 18 and 19 of February.

The exhibition will also showcase a range of technology, including electronics, CCTV cameras and logistics and security software.
