Intel establishes research lab at Copenhagen site

Johannesburg, 30 Jun 2004

Intel recently announced the establishment of its Corporate Technology Group in Denmark and the opening of the Copenhagen Design Lab.

As an addition to Circuit Research Lab`s signalling team in Hillsboro, Oregon, the Copenhagen team`s research focus will be on signalling circuits and copper-based interconnects for Intel future microprocessors, chipsets and platforms.

Research in this area is expected to result in faster connections between computing and communication devices and help to keep pace with the ever-increasing speeds of Intel microprocessors. The new lab will collaborate on high-speed I/O research with Intel`s existing Optical Networking Component Division (OND) in Denmark.

The Research Lab in Copenhagen will be under the direction of Dr Ulrich Keil. Located in Copenhagen, Keil has 14 years of experience in Femtosecond physics and broadband analogue circuit design and layout. Keil and his team will join the Circuit Research Lab, which is part of the Microprocessor Technology Lab in the Corporate Technology Group.

Intel Denmark ApS is already home to a specialised silicon engineering team researching high-speed technologies and as part of the Optical Networking Component Division, develops, manufactures and markets high-performance, high-bandwidth physical media solutions for the world`s communication infrastructure. Together with the Danish Technical University in the proximity of the Copenhagen site, this environment offers years of experience and expertise in high-speed analogue semiconductor design.

"Establishing a research lab at the Copenhagen site is the next logical step for Intel`s presence in Copenhagen. The new team will build on existing research projects within Intel and take advantage of the leading role that the Danish research community plays in the area of high speed interconnects. It is a further step showing Intel`s commitment to R&D in EMEA," commented Stephen S Pawlowski, Intel Fellow and Director, Microprocessor Technology Lab, Corporate Technology Group.

"This new design lab and the presence of the Intel Microprocessor Technology Lab creates a growth opportunity for both the Danish site and the Danish engineering community. With the Intel Communications Group and Corporate Technology Group in Denmark, there are now two independent groups investing R&D funds in high-speed silicon engineering in Denmark," commented Richard Winther Lassen, Engineering Director, OND High Speed PHY Silicon Engineering, Intel Denmark ApS.
