Computer Olympiad finalists announced

The third and final round participants of the Computer Society of SA (CSSA) Computer Olympiad have been announced in Cape Town.

Peter Waker, chairman of the CSSA Computer Olympiad, says the competition has grown considerably from its inception in 1984, to a record number of almost 13 000 participants this year.

"It is most rewarding to see the growth in participation," he says.

"Of the12 855 students participating in the first round, 2 582 students from 248 schools made it to the second round of the Computer Olympiad. Twelve learners will now take part in the final round of the competition.

"The CSSA Computer Olympiad is one of the oldest competitions of its kind in SA. The Olympiad brings about an awareness of the potential use of computers, and encourages the spread of computer education for South African high school learners.

"The students are given a project to design their own computer program. The aim of the Olympiad is to identify, encourage and reward computer programming talent among young people," says Waker.

The 12 finalists are:

Keegan Carruthers-Smith, Pinelands High, Western Cape
Dario Fanucchi, Wordsworth High, Gauteng
Marius Hromnik, Rondebosch Boys High, Western Cape
Allen Jansen van Nieuwenhuizen, Uitsig High, Gauteng
Mikail Mosdell, Worcester Gymnasium, Western Cape
Andrew Linden, Northcliff High, Gauteng
Max Rabkin, Cedar House, Western Cape
Timothy Stranex, Crawford College, KwaZulu-Natal
Migael Strydom, Pretoria Boys High, Gauteng
Dylan Yudaken, King David High, Gauteng

The finalists will participate in the final round on 28 and 29 August at the University of Cape Town.

"The top six pupils from round three will receive additional training. The first prize-winner will get a computer worth R5 000, a gold medal, certificate and R1 500.

"Second and third prize-winners will receive a computer for their school, a silver medal, a certificate and R1 000 each. Fourth, fifth and sixth place winners will get a computer for their school, a bronze medal, a certificate and R500 each," says Waker.

Four of the finalists will also be selected to compete in the International Olympiad in Greece.
