Fake Lycos screensaver hides a keylogger

An e-mail purporting to contain the Lycos anti-spam screensaver actually delivers a dangerous payload, says F-Secure.

The malicious code, known as TrojanDropper.FakeSpamFighter, drops Perfect Keylogger components onto a victim`s PC. This allows a third-party to monitor the keystrokes of an infected system, revealing user/pass combos to online accounts and exposing private information.

According to EnterpriseITPlanet, the infected e-mail reads as follows:

Subject: Be the first to fight spam with Lycos screen saver

Attachment: Lycos screensaver to fight spam.zip

Users are warned to be on the lookout and not open unsolicited attachments.

Researchers set wireless speed record

Researchers in Germany are claiming the new world record for transmitting data across a wireless network.

A team at Siemens Communications` research laboratory in Munich has transmitted 1Gb of data per second across a mobile network. The average wireless computer network can send only around 50Mb of data per second, Newscientist reports.

The researchers used three transmitting and four receiving antennas and a technique for boosting the amount of data that can be sent wirelessly, called Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing, to set their record.

Siemens` mobile networks division president Christoph Caselitz estimates that wireless networks will be expected to cope with 10 times as much data by 2015.

Apple to use Toshiba chip

Toshiba says it will start selling flash memory to Apple Computer "early next year".

According to XinhuaNet, the comment comes amid speculation that Apple will unveil a flash-based iPod in January. Flash-based players store music on memory cards instead of drives with moving parts, and allow for more shock-resistant, sleeker designs.

Toshiba already supplies Apple with 1.8-inch hard drives for use in larger iPod models like the 40GB model, which can store up to 10 000 songs.
