Grintek, ATNS sign upgrade contract

Johannesburg, 26 Jul 2005

Grintek has been contracted by ATNS, the Air Traffic and Navigation Services Company, to supply, install and commission navigation aids across the country for a project that is being implemented by ATNS.

The multimillion-rand project, which officially commenced on 1 July 2005, will run over a period of 30 months. Grintek will deliver turnkey solutions to upgrade air navigation systems across the country. The order includes 10 DVOR systems, 18 VOR systems and five Distance Measuring Equipment manufactured by Thales ATM as well as equipment shelters, civil works and counterpoises for sites throughout SA.

The implementation of the new equipment will ensure the levels of service and the safety standards required for an efficient navigation system and a safe airspace are maintained.

The contract includes the installation of a state of the art Monitoring and Control System (MCS) that will allow ATNS to monitor and manage the newly installed equipment from a central point, thus ensuring the availability of the system.

Grintek will also supply the Aviation Training Academy (ATA) - ATNS's hi-tech training institution - with a computer-based training system. This will improve ATNS's ability to provide in-depth training and thus create the opportunity for skills development in SA as well as for other states in the SADC region operating similar equipment.

This project will be a challenge to both ATNS and Grintek in terms of the implementation schedule, quality of work, management skills, co-ordination and co-operation to complete the project within the allocated time and budget.
