Cheque, card fraud still common

Johannesburg, 16 Aug 2005

First National Bank (FNB) has warned customers to remain vigilant to avoid being defrauded in cheque and bankcard scams.

Cheque and card fraud is still a common occurrence, said FNB group forensic services consultant Wessel Theunissen at the launch of FNB`s ATM Security Week yesterday.

"Fraud does not discriminate and unless customers are informed about the latest tactics used by fraudsters, they can easily fall prey to such activities."

He warned that people should not let their credit cards out of their sight at retail stores or restaurants, because information on the card could be "skimmed" without the customer`s knowledge. This information could be used later to defraud the client.

"FNB recommends that customers accompany a cashier or waiter to the point where they swipe the card and ensure they receive their own card back. In turn, retailers should check the signature on the card corresponds with the signature on the receipt."

Theunissen also warned that if an ATM machine retained a card, the customer should not move away and leave the card in the ATM - especially after entering a PIN number.

"If it appears that the ATM has 'frozen` and does not continue with the transactions, the customer should immediately call FNB`s toll-free number to cancel their card."
