Software combines finger, face ID

Neurotechnologija, a provider of high-precision biometric identification technologies, has introduced MegaMatcher 2.0 SDK. It allows for the development of large-scale automated fingerprint identification systems (AFIs) and multi-biometric face-fingerprint identification systems.

MegaMatcher 2.0 includes fingerprint and face identification engines with a fusion algorithm, which allows the two technologies to work together to provide fast 1:N (1 to many) matching, with higher reliability than AFIS or facial recognition alone.

MegaMatcher's fused algorithm can produce 400 000 matches per second on a single processor PC. With MegaMatcher 2.0's fault-tolerant, scalable cluster software, this number can be multiplied across PCs to perform extremely fast, parallel fingerprint and face matching, using databases of practically unlimited size.

British govt seeks biometric immigration powers

The British government is seeking powers to take biometric data from immigrants for inclusion in next-generation visas.

The UK Borders Bill published last week includes measures stipulating that foreign nationals coming to live in the UK must supply fingerprints or iris scans for inclusion in their immigration documents.

The measures will help tackle fraud, illegal working and multiple identities, says the Home Office.

Russia's biometric passport drive falters

Russia's Kommersant reports the process of introducing biometric passports in Russia has gone "into a skid".

The Federal Migration Service (FMS) says the equipment for recording personal data of a passport-holder, supplied by Voskhod Enterprise, turned out to be unreliable and breaks all the time.

Voskhod, however, claims FMS employees simply do not have the skills to use the new equipment. The Russian government had planned to begin mass issuing of biometric passports in 2007.

Singapore reports biometric successes

Singapore's immigration and checkpoints authority (ICA) says sustained inspections at border checkpoints have nabbed 1 600 immigration offenders - more than the 1 300 reported the year before.

The increased arrests have been attributed to the use of biometric scanners at the checkpoints.

These scanners picked up biometric details of previous immigration offenders who tried to re-enter Singapore using a different identity.
