Which PC is a Vista PC?

It appears PC vendors are nearly as confused as consumers when it comes to determining what is a Vista PC, reports InformationWeek.

Microsoft's Windows Vista has finally reached the marketplace, but it may take a while for the marketplace to really get into Vista.

A week after Vista's commercial introduction, there is a flood of advertising, in-store displays and Web site promotions from PC vendors, all touting the new operating system. Much of it, however, still seems a little confused over what consumers need to know about the various versions of Vista and the hardware required to run all the features.

New York proposes earphone ban

A New York senator is introducing legislation this week that would make it an offence, punishable by a $100 fine, to use any electronic device while crossing a street, reports the New York Daily News.

Carl Kruger, a senator from Brooklyn, wants the ban proposed in his "distracted walking" Bill to be extended to mobile phones, handheld e-mailing devices and video games.

So far, the legislation is only proposed for larger cities in the state, including New York City. The offence, which would apply to walking, jogging and cycling, would involve a criminal court summons.

Warner rejects end to DRM systems

Warner Music has rejected a suggestion from Apple boss Steve Jobs that record companies should remove copy protection software from digital music downloads, reports BBC News.

In an open letter, the Apple boss noted that removing such software would also allow greater usability for customers, as any online music store would be able to sell songs that would work on all players.

Warner Music boss Edgar Bronfman said Job's proposal was "without logic and merit".

Israel bans online gambling

Israeli judge Abraham Heiman ruled last week that a foreign company may not take online bets from Israeli citizens, regardless of where it is headquartered or its servers are located, reports The Register.

Although Eran Shendar, Israel's top prosecutor, had already made it clear in December that online gambling was considered illegal, the detention of Victor Chandler CEO Michael Carlton last week opened a new front in the government's war on online gambling.

Following America's lead, Israel has now thrown down the gauntlet to those offering services from abroad.
