Nvidia is trying to do damage control after receiving several complaints from dissatisfied gamers about the performance of its graphics processors on Windows Vista, and ATI is hoping to take advantage of the situation, reports ComputerWorld.

ATI is the second-largest maker of standalone graphics card chips, and claims its Catalyst line of drivers is enabling almost all of its game-playing customers to use Vista problem-free, or with miniscule drops in performance from what they were getting on Windows XP.

"We're seeing less than a 5% gap on average," Ben BarHaim, VP of ATI's software engineering division, said in an interview last week. He added that ATI has been working "very closely" with Microsoft on Vista over the past four years and that all of the company's drivers are now certified by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs operation.

Playing better with Vista

Gaming and video fans are eager for this year's Cebit: the next-generation graphics cards will be on display at the computer fair in Hanover, ready to support the DirectX 10 standard that is integrated into Windows Vista.

The new graphics chips will make even sharper images a reality. Many hardware makers are also redoubling their efforts for more powerful graphics solutions for laptops, reports Playfuls.

"Graphic chips from the new generation are above all else of interest to gamers," says Carsten Spille, editor at the magazine PC Games Hardware.

AMD gives developers a Second Life

Chip manufacturer AMD has become the latest hi-tech vendor to latch on to the fast-growing phenomenon of setting up shop in the Second Life cyber fantasy world created by Linden Lab.

AMD would like to use Second Life as a virtual meeting place to better connect with developers and help them network with each other, reports ITWire.

The company has opened the AMD Dev Central Pavilion on AMD Dev Central Island, located within the Second Life metaverse, to extend its Developer Outreach programme into a virtual space for meetings, lectures, training courses and networking opportunities for developers.

Cisco extends iPhone deadline again

Cisco has given Apple another week to reach an agreement before legal proceedings begin for the iPhone name, after its previous deadline expired yesterday.

Cisco has continued its stance that it wants its iPhone to be able to communicate with the upcoming Apple product, says TG Daily.

Cisco said it is giving Apple until next Wednesday to reach an out-of-court settlement. Neither side is budging from its original position. Apple says the lawsuit is frivolous and questions whether it would actually violate Cisco's trademark rights to give the same name to its device.
