Lifetime warranty for ProCurve switch

HP's ProCurve networking group is continuing its assault on Cisco with the launch of a high-end network switch supported by a lifetime warranty, reports vnunet.com.

The ProCurve Switch 8212zl is designed to form the hub of a company's network, connecting in turn to a range of edge switches which hook up the PCs and other clients.

"ProCurve's Adaptive Networks vision gives global companies the flexibility to grow their infrastructure in line with business needs by enabling them to quickly adapt to new applications, fortify network security, increase productivity and reduce complexity," said John McHugh, VP and GM of ProCurve.

iPone bill blindsides user

Jay Levy received a 54-page monthly bill of nearly $4 800 from AT&T Wireless, says Chicagotribune.com. The mammoth bill arrived after he took his family and their iPhones on a Mediterranean cruise.

The iPhones, even while off, were racking up a bill for data charges. The iPhone regularly updates e-mail, even while it's off, so that all the messages will be available when the user turns it on.

"They have periodic updates on their data files, and they translate into megabucks," explained Levy. "This is like your bank having automatic access to your ATM machine and siphoning money out during all times of the day and night without your knowledge."

Skype for Windows wounded by worm

In a high-profile reminder of the security pitfalls that still exist with PC-based communications, states TechNews World, eBay's Skype is warning users of a fast-spreading worm affecting users of Skype for Windows.

Skype has said the worm spreads through the peer-to-peer phone service's instant chat application and is activated when a user clicks on a link in an instant message they receive.

These messages may appear to be from someone on a Skype user's contact list or from an unknown party. The messages contain an attachment that appears to be a JPEG photo but is actually executable code.

Microsoft, BBC talk Xbox

Microsoft has confirmed that discussions are taking place with the BBC to deliver content over Xbox Live, in Europe, says PALGN.

While on-demand content has yet to be launched across Europe, the discussions offer hope to those waiting for Xbox Live to move beyond the arcade, demos and trailers.

Microsoft has ensured US players will have the opportunity to enjoy content from a range of content providers, including CBS, Disney, Fox, MTV, Paramount and Warner. Details have so far been slim around how these content deals will translate globally.
