Xbox beats PlayStation

US sales of Microsoft Xbox 360 games console beat those of Sony's PlayStation 3 in March after Microsoft addressed earlier supply problems.

Microsoft sold 262 000 units of the Xbox 360 in March, according to figures from research firm NPD. Sony sold 257 000 units of the PlayStation 3 console.

Both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation were significantly outsold by Nintendo's Wii console, which sold 721 000 units in March.

SGN buys Facebook apps

Social Gaming Network (SGN) has bought developer outfit Esgut, as well as Facebook applications Oregon Trail, Nicknames, Friend Block and Free Gifts, says The Standard.

Zynga, SGN's archrival, bought CLZ, the developer of a group of Facebook gaming applications, in February.

Both companies are not only buying up games, they are trying to develop ad networks that bring in independent game developers. These are cross-promotional ads, where users will play a game on one app, and see an ad for another game app.

College football goes virtual

Students still hurting from last year's football loss to Michigan State now have the chance to win back their honour on a virtual playing field, says Collegian Online.

Dell's new College Gaming League is open exclusively to college students and those with "edu" e-mail addresses who want to challenge their rival schools in games.

Jay Pinkert, a representative from Dell, said the Web site was designed to create a community for students who are passionate about PC and console games.
