Backers optimistic about WiMax

WiMax's most prominent supporters predict it will take off this year, reports CNET news.

Speaking at a conference hosted by the Wireless Communications Association International, Michael Seymour, VP of Alcatel-Lucent's North American broadband wireless unit, said WiMax has experienced "tremendous growth" in recent years, even in "emerging markets" like the Dominican Republic, and predicted improvements in the technology would only continue.

Samsung has said it plans to release a WiMax-enabled version of its Q1 Ultra handheld PC in the US later this year.

Users unaware of danger

Most mobile phone users remain unaware of the threat of mobile viruses until their devices suddenly stop working, said Patrik Runald, security response manager of anti-virus company F-Secure, states The Star online.

About 400 mobile viruses have been detected so far but as smart mobile devices replace the desktop PCs as the dominant Internet platform, this number is expected to rise.

Bluetooth is just one of the mobile virus infection mechanisms. Others include the infrared port, the swapping of memory cards, downloading contents over-the-air as well as through text and multimedia messages.

Healthcare thinks wireless cheaper

According to a report, healthcare providers are increasingly using wireless technology to drive down the costs linked with telecare and other new health services, says Management in Practice.

The study, Wireless Healthcare 2008, also identifies a number of electronics companies that are seeking a safe harbour in the healthcare market as the recession impacts on their traditional markets.

However, authors of the report, UK-based analyst Wireless Healthcare, warns that as a significant number of medical devices are bought privately, the healthcare market could also be adversely affected by the economic downturn.
