Dell outmanoeuvres Windows XP cut off

According to Laptop Logic, Dell has confirmed it will continue to sell and support Windows XP to consumers beyond the 30 June cut-off imposed by Microsoft. Dell will take advantage of a licensing option in Vista Business and Vista Ultimate that allows PC makers to provide XP under the Vista licence, which Microsoft calls a "downgrade" licence.

This means an end-user buying a Vista licence can apply the same to authenticate Windows XP. A Dell spokesperson revealed the company will continue to pre-install Windows XP Professional as a "downgrade" on a variety of desktop PCs and laptops.

The computers available with the XP option will include the Windows Vista installation DVD in the box so users can later install Vista over XP under the same licence if they wish.

Apple offers updated iMac

Apple today announced refreshed iMacs and is offering an unannounced Intel processor as part of the package, says Tom's Hardware.

The systems can be ordered with the 45nm Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100 processor, which is expected to officially launch with Intel's Montevina refresh.

The new iMacs look like the iMacs introduced in August last year, but received a solid hardware upgrade across all major components. Processor speeds now reach from 2.4GHz over 2.66 and 2.8GHz all the way to the 3.06GHz X9100 CPU with 6MB L2 cache and a 1 066MHz FSB.

Job cuts cost Yahoo

Yahoo expects to incur pre-tax cash charges of about $29 million for expenses related to a workforce reduction disclosed on 15 February 2008, reports Reuters.

The charges are offset by a $12 million credit related to stock-based compensation expense reversals, it said.

It recognised $29 million of the severance pay expenses and related cash expenditures in the first quarter of 2008.

No Wii or DS price cuts

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has stated the company has no plans to drop the price of the DS or Wii in 2008, states E Canada Now.

He said the forecast for Nintendo does not factor in any type of hardware discounting.

This comes as Nintendo dominates sales with the Wii and DS, beating out rivals Sony and Microsoft each and every month.
