VMware's virtual data centre operating system initiative will accelerate customers down the virtualisation path, so they can run their IT as an internal cloud service, said Paul Maritz, president and CEO of VMware.

Maritz addressed international delegates at the VMworld Europe 2009 Conference, held in Cannes, outlining VMware's strategy and technology roadmap on cloud computing.

VMware's vSphere generation of products, which are currently in development, will build on its new virtual data centre operating system initiative, he added.

Operating in the cloud

"VMware's focus is on enabling our customers to run their data centres as internal clouds and operate in a far more flexible and cost-efficient way,” Maritz said.

"Our customers want the plumbing to disappear in the data centre, on the desktop and in the cloud, so they can focus their staff time and IT budget on delivering business value. They want cloud-like services so they can act as hosting providers to their internal customers.”

The VMware vCloud initiative enables a company to take its existing applications that are running in VMware environments, and run them in internal or external clouds, with high availability, manageability and security.

Companies choosing to move into the private cloud are doing so because of the appeal of using industry-standard X86 hardware, as well as virtualisation technologies, the company said in a statement. This increases choice in new application architectures and the availability of new clouds with cheap and readily accessible computing power.
