Symantec has released two new products, Brightmail Gateway version 8.0, an enterprise messaging security platform; and Brightmail IQ, an online resource that provides real-time insights into the latest spam trends to the public.

Brightmail Gateway 8.0 features an Adaptive Reputation Management system that prioritises mail from reputable senders, while starving spammers' resources at the connection level. FastPass access is granted to legitimate senders, which allows their mails through Brightmail Gateway immediately, completely bypassing spam scans.

“Spam's insidious rise to 'normal' in the weeks following the McColo shutdown has shown us just how quickly spammers can adapt in the fight against spam,” said Kevin Isaac, regional director for Africa and the Middle East at Symantec. “For our customers, it has underscored the value of our new Adaptive Reputation Management system, which allows them to simply place priority on e-mail from reputable senders and not worry whether spam levels are at 70% or 95%.”

Symantec has included expanded support for Brightmail operating in virtual environments, with Brightmail Gateway 8.0 Virtual Edition. Version 8.0 adds support for VMware, ESXi, as well as VMware ESX, along with support for mixed physical and virtual deployments.

Since the introduction of Brightmail Gateway Virtual Edition in February 2008, Symantec customers have deployed over a thousand virtual appliances in production environments, the company says.

Combining information from Symantec's Global Intelligence Network with analysis by Symantec Security Response, as well as Brightmail's operations teams, users are provided insights into the world of spam by way of spam volumes, content types and categories. Information can be retrieved by date, and the site tracks spam statistics back to 2002.

Visitors to the site can also check up on the status of specific sender IP addresses, read blog posts from the Brightmail operations team on spam-related topics, and involve themselves in online discussions and research reports via the site's forum.
