Obama outlines cyber security strategy

US president Barack Obama has announced a cyber security strategy and the creation of a White House post to personally advise him on protecting the nation's digital infrastructure, reports Computing.co.uk.

“This new approach starts from the top with this commitment from me,” says Obama.

“Our digital infrastructure, the networks and computers we depend on every day, will be treated as they should be, as a strategic national asset. Protecting this infrastructure will be a national security priority.”

Turkish hackers breach US Army servers

US government investigators are probing breaches of two sensitive Army Web servers by suspected Turkish hackers, says The Register.

One of the servers, located at the Army's McAlester Ammunition Plant, in Oklahoma, was breached on 26 January. The hack was carried out by a Turkey-based collective known as "m0sted" and caused people attempting to access the site to be redirected to a Web page protesting climate change.

A separate security lapse occurred in September 2007, when the same band of attackers broke into Army Corps of Engineers' servers. They sent site visitors to m0sted.com, which at the time contained anti-American and anti-Israeli rhetoric and images, the records showed.

Seven million 'use illegal files'

Government advisers say around seven million people in the UK are involved in illegal downloads, costing the economy tens of billions of pounds, reports the BBC.

Researchers found 1.3 million people using one file-sharing network on one weekday and estimated that over a year, they had free access to material worth £12 billion.

The Strategic Advisory Board for Intellectual Property warned it may be hard to change attitudes.

Boston Power plans battery plant

Battery company Boston Power thinks it can bring electric car battery manufacturing to the US with some help from government stimulus funds, says CNet.

The company is scheduled to hold a press event in Hudson where it plans to build a factory to make lithium-ion batteries for laptops and electric vehicles.

Construction of the facility, which used to be a distribution centre for a clothing retailer, is contingent on a grant from the US Department of Energy's advanced battery and cell manufacturing grant programme.
