Citrix updates XenServer functionality

Johannesburg, 29 Jun 2009

Citrix has released XenServer 5.5, which it calls a significant upgrade to XenServer, as well as a XenServer Central community Web site, offering resources for XenServer users.

According to Citrix, the XenServer 5.5 release provides customers already using the free XenServer product a wide range of new enterprise management capabilities at no additional charge.

“The overwhelming download numbers we have seen in the last two months demonstrate that many customers are not happy with the growing cost and complexity of their existing virtualisation solutions. By combining the free XenServer with the advanced management capabilities in Citrix Essentials, customers now have a proven alternative that meets all the requirements for enterprise-class virtualisation at a fraction of the cost,” says Nick Keene, country manager, Citrix Systems SA.

The company believes that with the 5.5 release, XenServer provides all the functionality that typically costs up to $5 000 (R40 000) per server with other leading virtualisation products.

In addition to the release of XenServer 5.5, Citrix also unveiled the XenServer Central community Web site.

The Web site, the company notes, is a resource for XenServer-related topics to help users enhance their use of the free enterprise-ready virtualisation platform.

According to Citrix, the XenServer Central site will feature the latest product information, tips, access to the Citrix KnowledgeCenter and Web-based support forums, along with offers from Citrix Ready partners for free or discounted licences for complementary products.
