Teenage hacker unlocks iPhone 3G S

George Hotz, the 19-year-old hacker who made headlines for unlocking Apple's original iPhone, has now released the first-known jailbreaking tool for iPhone 3G S, says eWeek (http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Security/Apple-iPhone-3GS-Jailbreaking-Tool-Hits-the-Street-264313/).

The tool, "purplea1n", is only available for versions of the Windows operating system, excluding Windows 7, but Hotz declared in a blog post that a version for the Mac is forthcoming.

The software requires that the latest version of iTunes is installed and is for iPhone 3G S with 3.0 firmware.

4chan may be behind Twitter attacks

Twitter saw a huge influx of fake accounts, pushing the NSFW trending topic, #gorillapenis, all the way to the top of the list, states cnet (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13515_3-10279618-26.html).

Popular image board 4chan /b/, along with other various sites, appears to be behind this latest raid on Twitter.

4chan, a hub of Internet culture and memes, has long been the spawning point of various raids on sites, most recently YouTube Porn Day.

Suit over China's Web filter

A US company will seek legal action against Lenovo, Acer and Sony next week over their shipment in China of controversial software that the company says stole its programming code, reports PCWorld (http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/167842/
suit_over_chinas_web_filter_to_target_lenovo_acer_sony.html).

Solid Oak Software may also take action against other PC makers that have started shipping the software, a company spokesperson said in an e-mail.

She declined to give details of the action, but the company previously said it might seek a US court injunction to stop PC vendors from shipping the program.

Marc Andreessen introduces venture fund

Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape and co-founder of Opsware, and Ben Horowitz, also co-founder of Opsware, are unveiling a venture fund, named Andreessen Horowitz, says cnet

The fund's mission is financially broad, but technologically narrow.

Andreessen said the $300 million fund will invest from $50 000 to $5 million in start-ups, which means it's part angel fund and part typical venture capital firm.

Fire knocks out Bing Travel

An electrical fire at downtown Seattle's Fisher Plaza interrupted service at a long roster of Web sites, including Microsoft's Bing Travel, reports cnet (http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10279084-93.html).

Fisher Communications said in statement the problems at the Fisher Plaza data centre started in a garage-level electrical room.

Fisher said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Some of the affected sites put up messages explaining what had happened.
