The first South African special interest group on digital forensics had its inaugural meeting yesterday in Johannesburg, and will focus on bringing institutions and companies together to lift the veil on this issue.

Security professionals will meet every first Tuesday of the month to discuss prevalent issues within digital forensics.

The group is led by Karel Rode, business technologist at CA. Other members include associates from The Scorpions, the SA Police Service, Interpol, financial services, service providers, legal services, as well as the chairman of the Information Security Group of Africa, Craig Rosewarne.

"Our aim is to bring together role-players from different institutions in order to more effectively understand digital forensics, and work together to end associated crimes," explained Rode.

An open forum sparked discussion pertaining to the recent Internet caf'e key-logging syndicate, what is to be done upon the discovery of a hardware key-logger, demystifying the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act and the Monitoring and Interception Act, and various other related topics.

"In many cases, companies don`t know what to do when they discover unlawful PC- or Internet-based activity occurring in the workplace," said Rode. "This group also aspires to aid in the understanding of the processes involved."
