Dubai, 31 Jul 2007

Dubai's Du, the UAE's second telecommunications company, made a second-quarter net loss of 280.8 million dirhams ($76.47 million), while revenue almost tripled to 302.3 million dirhams.

Analysts' forecasts for Du's second-quarter loss ranged from 244.10 million dirhams and 363 million dirhams in a Reuters survey last month.

Du, which started the UAE's second mobile phone network in February, had more than 553 000 mobile phone subscribers at end-June, it said in a statement on the Dubai bourse Web site.

Du's shares fell more than 1% in early trading.

The firm's capital expenditure in the six months to 30 June 2007 was 899 dirhams, much of that going towards the launch of mobile phone services in February, Du said in a statement.

Revenue jumped 183.8% in the quarter mainly driven by mobile phone use and an increase in fixed-line subscribers in Dubai, said Du CEO Osman Sultan.
