Sybase embraces BlackBerry wireless platform

Johannesburg, 14 Dec 2004

The introduction of Research in Motion`s (RIM`s) BlackBerry wireless platform to the local market is imminent, preceded by a flood of publicity and advertising. The wireless connectivity solution provides access to a wide range of applications on a variety of wireless devices around the world.

Gerard Sofianos, manager of Sybase SA`s Unwired Practice, says the advantage of BlackBerry for corporate SA is that it combines devices, software and services to keep mobile professionals connected to the people, data and resources they require on a daily basis.

"Its push-based technology keeps people up to date with all the information they need by automatically delivering e-mail and other data to their BlackBerry devices," he says. "With integrated phone, SMS, browser and organiser applications, users can easily manage all their information and communications from a single, integrated device."

Sybase`s mobile platforms support Blackberry and have done so for a number of years.

"Sybase has long recognised BlackBerry as a significant player in the wireless arena," says Sofianos. "The technology has been deployed by thousands of companies and government agencies to keep their mobile professionals connected, providing them with access to the information where they need it."

As a major player in the mobile space, Sybase`s support for BlackBerry and other major platforms extends all the way from enterprise application solutions through to device management.

Sofianos adds that complemented by Sybase`s mobile offering, BlackBerry will provide the local market with a comprehensive solution to its communication and corporate data needs.

In November RIM announced that BlackBerry had passed a major industry milestone by exceeding two million active wireless subscribers, making it the first integrated wireless data platform to reach this subscriber mark.

"This illustrates the increasing popularity of the platform and the huge market potential for converged devices and wireless data connectivity," Sofianos says. "Because enterprise mobility device types are so diverse, Sybase has not aligned itself exclusively to any one platform; we also embrace Symbian, Palm, Pocket PC and Windows CE.

Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere has been one of the pioneers in providing central management of mobile devices, offering a platform-independent, device-independent solution for enterprise mobility.
