Axiz, leading IT infrastructure distributor, introduces the Flash SSD (NAND flash-based solid state disk) from Samsung Electronics. The SSD serves the same purpose as a hard disk drive, ie a sophisticated data storage medium.
The SSD uses instantly-accessible, non-moving NAND flash memory instead of rotating discs found in hard drives. It can therefore upload and download data quickly and quietly with minimal power consumption.
"The SSD uses just 5% of the electricity needed to power a hard disc drive and is soundless," says Caroline Macharia, Axiz flash memory product manager. "It weighs only half as much as a comparably-sized hard drive and reads data three times faster, while also writing data 1.5 times faster."
With these reading and writing speeds, multiple application programs can operate simultaneously, and large volumes of data can be edited and reproduced more efficiently. "Reports indicate the Microsoft Windows XP operating system will boot-up 25-50% faster on the SSD than on other drives," comments Macharia.
Designed to look like a conventional hard drive from the outside, the inside includes NAND Flash memory devices, controller, connectors and other components commonly found on a printed circuit board.
Available in 1.8- and 2.5-inch versions with capacities ranging from 4Gb to 32Gb, Samsung's SSDs offer several advantages over comparable hard disk drives and also supports Ready Boost, Vista's new caching technology.
In providing a high-performance, low-power storage solution, the SSDs are perfectly suited for notebooks and other mobile computers. Also highly rugged, the SSDs stand up to shock and vibration damage while performing in extreme temperatures, from -250 to 850 degrees Celsius. These performance features make it well suited to a broad range of environments, including demanding military and industrial areas.
