Industry leaders MTN, ProScan Systems and Intermec Technologies collaborated to launch the Intermec CN3, the world's smallest rugged mobile computer, to the enterprise market in southern Africa.
Targeted at the enterprise market and designed to meet the needs of workers performing mission-critical tasks in transportation, logistics and field service, the CN3 is optimised for supply chain management with its four converged and embedded radio technologies.
The CN3 integrates GPS positioning and a choice of WiFi, Bluetooth, and WAN voice and high-speed data services using GSM/EDGE.
The choice between an area imager or 1.3MP colour camera with LED flash means users can scan and decode bar codes or capture still images, turning the CN3 into a vital data validation tool that can either store information or send it anywhere in the world.
Andrew Fosbrook, Managing Director of ProScan, leader in bar coding, RFID, data collection, wireless networking and mobile technologies, says: "Until now, mobile workers typically had to carry and maintain a multitude of devices such as cellphones, GPS units, pagers, laptops, scanners and cameras in order for them to function effectively in the field. The Intermec CN3 combines form and function in ways that were only previously met by carrying multiple devices.
"Through 2005, more than 65% of the Fortune 2000 companies adopted mobile applications. Today's companies are realising the value of automating their mobile workforce so that workers in the field can access the enterprise and its data resources on a real-time basis. Herein lies the key to enhancing productivity, accuracy, profitability and, ultimately, customer satisfaction."
Hylton McCabe, Business Development Manager - South Africa for Intermec Technologies, adds: "Currently, the market is exposed to rugged units designed for top-end harsh environments and the consumerist 'cellphone' devices at the entry level. The enterprise market has been waiting for the best of both worlds and the CN3 fills the gap perfectly at both a feature-rich and durability level within an affordable price-bracket.
"The CN3 helps to increase returns on investment and productivity is boosted through the effective use of proven technologies, thereby reducing human error and streamlining operations. All these factors help to lower the total cost of ownership."
Intermec Technologies is a global leader in the development, manufacture and integration of wired and wireless automated data collection systems, bar code printers and bar code scanners. ProScan is the sole distributor for Intermec Technologies in southern Africa.
Brett Kinsey, Senior Manager, Partner Management at MTN Corporate Business Unit, says: "Now that the mobile phone has evolved into a pocket-sized package of business and personal productivity, mobile working demands even greater innovation and a far greater range of applications and rugged devices. The new CN3 Mobile Computer will allow our customers to utilise all the functionality needed to work on the move while being in some of the harshest and most demanding environments.
"MTN is delighted to be part of this tri-alliance, with many years of experience and a successful portfolio within South Africa, each company has considerable skill sets which offer corporate customers the edge. Our combined core attributes of demonstrable business insights, dedication to high-quality products and reciprocal, long-term relationships will ensure customer satisfaction," adds Kinsey.
