iDefense finds Trend Micro flaws

Security researchers at iDefense Labs have uncovered a number of exploitable buffer overflow vulnerabilities in two Trend Micro products, says SC Magazine.

The vulnerabilities could allow remote users to execute code with system-level privileges on computers running the products, Trend Micro's anti-spyware software for desktop and notebook PCs, and its ServerProtect anti-virus software for Windows and NetWare servers.

iDefense said multiple boundary errors in the ServerProtect product can be exploited to cause stack-based buffer overflows in various ServerProtect services.

PC World releases children's laptops

PC World is launching a range of laptops aimed specifically at children. PC World hopes to capitalise on the rush to kit out kids for the new school year with its robust Advent K range of laptops with interchangeable covers, says PC Advisor.

The sample PC World sent through showed a £649, including VAT, Advent K300 laptop with an Intel Pentium dual-core T2130 processor, 2GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive. The Advent K300 has a 15.4-inch widescreen and a 1.3Mp Web cam and has a football motif for its cover.

PC World says the Advent K300 will be the top-of-the-line model and, in common with the Advent K200, will come with Microsoft's Encarta encyclopaedia software. The K300 will also ship with the Home and Student Edition of Microsoft Office.

Quanta CEO quits

Taiwan's Quanta Computer, a contract notebook PC maker, said its chief executive quit on Friday, reportedly following a strategy row. The row sparked a rally in its stock on merger speculation, according to Reuters.

Michael Wang's resignation had been rumoured for the past few months, following an extended period of leave. The company announced that acting CEO and co-founder CC Leung had taken over with immediate effect.

Wang, who has been with Quanta for about 19 years, has helped win orders from major clients, including top brands such as Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Sony.
