Lenovo offers solar-powered PC

Lenovo's A61e desktops PC touts EPEAT Gold status, exceeds the new Energy Star 4.0 standards, and has an 85% efficient power supply, according to PCMag.com.

With a 45-watt AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor, it can run off an optional solar panel and uses as much power as three light bulbs. And it's made of 90% reusable or recyclable materials.

Lenovo claims replacing your current PC with one of these can save more than $20 a year in energy costs and the equivalent of the carbon dioxide emissions created by two round-trip plane flights from Boston to New York.

Dell tightens security

Dell introduced two Latitude notebooks for business that are the computer maker's most secure portable PCs, according to Information Week.

The D630 and D830 include Seagate's Momentus full disk encryption hard drive, which is available in capacities up to 160GB. In addition, the portables ship with Wave Systems' Embassy Trust Suite.

The software's remote administration server enables IT staff to document that all data on a lost notebook was encrypted by the hard drive.

NEC unveils vPro PCs

NEC has launched two computers utilising Intel's vPro technology, which it claims will reduce the total cost of ownership for buyers, says ZDNet.co.uk.

The PowerMate ML470 desktop and Versa M370 notebook both feature integrated Intel Active Management Technology (AMT). This stores hardware and software information in non-volatile memory to facilitate remote management whether the machines are turned on or off.

In the case of the ML470, the technology is incorporated via Intel's Q35 vPro chipset, while the M370 is based on the Centrino Pro platform.

Wipro scans Uttarakhand

Wipro plans to set up its second computer and server manufacturing facility in north India, with an initial capacity of 2.5 lakh units per annum, according to The Economic Times.

The company, which is eyeing tax-friendly destinations such as Baddi in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, is looking at finalising the location in less than two months.

Wipro's existing facility in Puducherry, a location that enjoys tax incentives too, is based on a 10-acre land area and has a total capacity of manufacturing 2.5 lakh pieces per annum.
