South African consumers will pay less for the Xbox 360 family of consoles as of Friday, says Microsoft.
The entry-level Xbox 360 Arcade will be sold at an estimated retail price of R1 999, which - according to Microsoft - represents a R700 saving on its current retail price.
The Xbox 360 Elite, with its 120GB hard drive, is to sell at R3 999, and the Pro, with the 20GB hard drive, will cost R2 999. This represents a R600 and R700 saving, respectively.
"Xbox 360 is now mass market in Europe and SA," says VP of Microsoft interactive entertainment business in EMEA Chris Lewis.
He says the console has reached key milestones in its expansion strategy, which allowed the company to "widen the market".
"We continue to offer intense, immersive gaming experiences for gamers - but now we're priced in a way that will allow new consumers to find out for themselves why Xbox 360 is the ultimate in high-definition entertainment.
"History shows that R1 999 is the price point where a console's audience begins to expand, and with these new estimated retail prices in place, we're ready to bring more consumers into the Xbox 360 world," says Lewis.
Last year, it was reported that Microsoft would bring Xbox Live direct to the South African market. It is not yet clear when this will happen. Microsoft's reported talks with Sony around inclusion of the Blu-ray in its console have also not been confirmed by the company locally.
