NCSolutions is introducing the NComputing L-Series virtual desktop series to SA, in a bid to further popularise the PC alternative that uses less power than a "green" light bulb.

The release follows Gartner research that suggests desktop virtualisation will move toward mainstream usage by 2010. A Forrester Research survey cites that lower costs and better security, as well as manageability, will be the main reasons for business to adopt the technology.

NCSolutions MD Sean Owen-Jones says desktop virtualisation builds on the success of server virtualisation, which has brought business impressive benefits.

"Like its data centre counterpart, desktop virtualisation presents substantial power and cost savings, ease-of-management and drives down on-site support and maintenance costs," he says.

Owen-Jones says the L-Series terminal represents "the next evolution in the virtual thin client model, enabling as many as 30 users to simultaneously run virtualised desktop Windows and Linux sessions from an entry-level PC or server."

He adds that desktop virtualisation reduces the cost of desktop use by as much as 70% and electric consumption by 90%. In the case of the L230, each of the 30 terminals run at 5W of power, in comparison to 15W for a standard eco-friendly light bulb, or 280 for most PCs.

"Furthermore, the terminals save up to 70% of the traditional expenses associated with equipping end-users with PCs - maintenance and support costs are also dramatically reduced as only the host PC has to be maintained and upgraded, as well as offering better graphics than traditional thin clients," adds Owen-Jones.
