MTC's LG Cookie makes waves

Windhoek, 02 Jun 2009

It is not exactly the edible type, but the LG KP 500 handset was the most popular item for visitors at the Tourism Expo that ran from 27 to 30 May 2009 at the Windhoek Showgrounds on Saturday.

Aptly nicknamed Cookie, the handset captured the attention of all and sundry and in no time, the MTC stand was swamped by customers who were ready to splash the cash on this latest technological invention.

MTC launched the product with an enticing 'buy one get one free' offer, which was snapped up like the 'hot-cake' that it was. For a mere N$1 799, lucky customers could buy one phone and get another one absolutely free. That offer was only valid for the first 450 customers who applied by registering through the MTC Web site. According to MTC Managing Director, Miguel Geraldes, the Web-based application process was another demonstration of the company's quest to embed electronic commerce as a way of life in Namibia.

“MTC is on a journey to ensure that its customers get nothing but the best in telecommunications products and services. We are continuously striving to improve our systems, and electronic commerce is definitely one area we will give special attention in future, and we believe that we established a new record in Namibia - 450 sales of a retail product through Internet, at a cost of N$1 799 in less than 24 hours,” said Geraldes.

The Cookie, as from Wednesday, 3 June 2009, will be sold at a fee of N$1 799 per handset, inclusive of a N$19 starter pack, in all the MTC Mobile Homes across the country. This will give other customers an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of an iPhone through the convenience of the Cookie, and at a giveaway price. The LG Cookie is hitherto the most affordable and easy to use touch screen phone available in the Namibian market.

According to its manufacturers, the LG KP500 has an embedded stylus pen concealed in the base that can be easily removed for the advanced handwriting recognition program that allows the user to write memos and text messages, and also edit photo images by touching the screen with the pen tip.

The qwerty onscreen keyboard slides into view when the LG-KP500 is held horizontally, and the auto rotating display always shifts images or documents for proper viewing, no matter which way the handset is turned. Also packed into the LG KP500 are motion sensor games that are played by turning, flipping, and shifting the handset for a more active and fun gaming experience, with just a flick of the wrist. The phone is fuelled by a powerful battery, which provides a remarkable talk time for up to seven hours. The phone packs in a three-megapixel camera and comes in eye-caching Vandyke brown colour.

The phone has an internal memory for 48MB and also bundles a 1GB micro SD cards for user to store their favourite music, videos and images. The phone also packs in benefit like USB charging through the data cable, provided in box for users who are computer savvy. The phone also displays the images clicked on a time scale for easy reference of users. The LG-KP500 phone is just 11.9mm thick, placing it among the lightest and thinnest handsets.

Meanwhile, MTC's 081-Nation road show is progressing well. The interactive road show has covered 11 towns so far, giving customers the opportunity to express themselves about MTC. As from 2 June 2009, the road show will visit Keetmanshoop, Luderitz, Gobabis, Windhoek (Katutura), Karibib and Swakopmund. The last pit stops of the 081-Nation road show are Walvis Bay, Usakos and Windhoek City Centre on 26 June 2009.
