Autonomy Corporation, a global leader in infrastructure software for the enterprise, today announced that SJ, the Swedish Railways organisation, has selected Autonomy's unique Pan-Enterprise Search technology to enhance information access within the group.

Autonomy's core infrastructure technology, the Intelligent Data Operating Layer (IDOL), will index over 1.5 million documents to enable SJ employees to benefit from instant access to relevant information, improved collaboration across geographic locations, and a first-class user experience, thus boosting efficiency, helping avoid duplication of effort and ultimately improving customer service. Future plans include the extension of the IDOL platform to the SJ Web site, www.sj.se.

Autonomy's Meaning-Based technology was selected after a competitive procurement, owing to IDOL's unique ability to form an understanding of SJ's over 1.5 million documents stored across distinct geographic locations and in a plethora of formats, and to process this information through a single interface.

Unlike legacy approaches, IDOL's pattern-matching technology can identify hidden connections between disparate pieces of data and provide experts with pertinent content in real-time, thus enabling SJ professionals to depart from mundane tasks such as searching for data and focus on adding higher value services.

"IDOL's unique Meaning-Based technology has enabled us to harness the true value of SJ's information assets, rather than fall prey to information overload," commented Stefan Carlsson, IT Manager at SJ. "The result is enhanced productivity, improved collaboration, and a first-class user experience for our extensive customer base," continued Mr Carlsson. "Furthermore, owing to the power of IDOL and the expertise of the Autonomy Professional Services team, this project was completed well ahead of schedule."

IDOL's truly innovative features such as Conceptual Search, Automatic Clustering and Hyperlinking add an unprecedented level of intelligence to data access and processing. For example, Conceptual Search retrieves documents that are thematically similar, even if they don't feature the keywords used in the original query, thus moving beyond traditional approaches that depend heavily on grammatical structure or specific vocabulary. Automatic Clustering provides SJ employees with a bird's-eye-view of data in the organisation, thus allowing them to spot hot trends and topics and to adopt a proactive approach to customer queries. Finally, IDOL's unique Automatic Hyperlinking feature suggests pertinent documents that are contextually linked to the original text, thus ensuring professionals enjoy full visibility over relevant corporate content.

"The proliferation of human-friendly, unstructured information is prompting a growing number of organisations to embrace Meaning-Based technologies as the only solution capable of forming a conceptual understanding from data," commented Dr Mike Lynch, CEO of Autonomy. "We are delighted that IDOL has been selected to underpin SJ's information strategy."
